West Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services Requirements

  • Although we strive to keep everything updated, please check with your state EMS Representative for the most current re-certification information.

  • West Virginia licensees must renew every 4 years.

    • EMRs by September 30th
    • EMT, AEMT and Paramedics by March 31st
  • EMR Requirements:

    1. Haz Mat awareness meeting OSHA 1910.120 or higher standards. (3 hours awarded and required annually.)
    2. MCI or Disaster Management related training to include mass casualty drills totaling a minimum of 2 hours biennially. (4 hours per WVOEMS Recertification)

    EMT, AEMT & Paramedic Requirements:

    1. Haz Mat Awareness meeting OSHA 1910.120 or higher standards. (3 hours awarded and required annually)
    2. WVOEMS BLS, AEMT or ALS protocol review. (2 hours awarded and required annually)
    3. MCI or Disaster Management related training to include mass casualty drills totaling a minimum of 2 hours biennially. (4 hours per WVOEMS Recertification)

  • Licensees shall complete continuing education requirements and maintain certification with the National Registry.

    • All provider levels: EMR, EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic shall maintain a National Registry account.
    • State Licensed Only (SLO) providers MUST have a National Registry account and complete all requirements of National Registry. The only difference an SLO experiences is that they will not have an actual National Registry certification. SLOs are not exempt from completing the National Registry requirements.
    • All EMS education MUST be entered into your TRANSCRIPT in your National Registry Account.
  • Important Notice: An EMR/EMT/AEMT/Paramedic certified by WVOEMS must be continually certified by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) during the duration of your WVOEMS certification. Failure to retain uninterrupted National Certification will result in the immediate suspension of your WVOEMS certification and your right to practice in West Virginia.
