Ohio Department of Public Safety Division of EMS Requirements

A first responder or EMT certificate to practice shall expire on the individual’s birthday in the third year, except if a first responder or EMT certificate to practice, issued to an individual who also holds a current firefighter and/or fire safety inspector certificate, shall expire on the same date as the individual’s firefighter certificate or fire safety inspector certificate.

Requirements for Paramedics:

For Paramedic recertification, an applicant shall comply with one of the following: Distance CME recomends this program Refresher
-Completion of continuing education hours. 86 hours of continuing education to include a minimum of 12 hours on trauma issues; 4 hours on geriatric issues; 8 hours on trauma issues; 6 hours on cardiac care. Ohio Admin Code 4765-17-02(A)(1).
-Completion of a paramedic refresher course and completion of 38 continuing education hours. Ohio Admin Code 4765-17-02(A)(2).
-Current registration with the national registry of paramedic or equivalent level. Ohio Admin Code 4765-17-02(A)(3)

Requirements for Advanced EMT (Intermediate):

For AEMT’s recertification, an applicant shall comply with one of the following: Distance CME recomends this program Refresher
-Completion of continuing education hours. 60 hours of continuing education to include a minimum of eight hours on pediatric issues; four hours on geriatric issues; eight hours on trauma issues. Ohio Admin Code 4765-16-03(A)(1).
-Completion of an advanced emergency medical technician refresher training program of 20 hours of continuing education. Ohio Admin Code 4765-16-03(A)(2).
-Current registration with the national registry of emergency medical technicians as the advanced emergency medical technician or equivalent level. Ohio Admin Code 4765-16-03(A)(3).

Requirements for EMT:

For EMT’s recertification, an applicant shall comply with one of the following: Distance CME recomends this program Refresher
-Completion of continuing education hours. 40 hour of continuing education to include a minimum of six hours on pediatric issues; 2 hours on geriatric issues’ and eight hours on trauma issues. Ohio Admin. Code 4765-1503 (A)(1).
-Completion of a thirty-hour emergency medical technical refresher program. Completion of continuing education hours Ohio Admin. Code 4765-1503 (A)(2).
-Current registration with the national registry of emergency medical technicians at the emergency medical technician level. Completion of continuing education hours Ohio Admin. Code 4765-1503 (A)(3).

Requirements for EMR:

For EMR recertification, an applicant shall comply with one of the following: Distance CME recomends this program Refresher
-Completion of continuing education hours. 15 hours to include a minimum of one hour dedicated to each of the following topics: patient assessment, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, airway management and oxygen administration, automated defibrillation, illness and injury management, trauma issues, anaphylaxis and patient-assisted auto-injector epinephrine administration. Ohio Admin Code 4765-12-03(A)(1).
-Completion of an emergency medical responder refresher program. Ohio Admin Code 4765-12-03(A)(2).
-Current registration with the national registry of emergency medical technicians at the emergency medical responder or equivalent level. Ohio Admin Code 4765-12-03(A)(3).
