This self-paced course provides an in-depth overview of key diagnostic studies and laboratory values essential to the assessment, monitoring, and management of critically ill and injured patients. Designed for advanced-level EMS providers and critical care transport clinicians, this module emphasizes the clinical relevance of common laboratory findings encountered in the prehospital and interfacility setting.

  • Explore electrolyte imbalances, renal and hepatic markers, hematologic parameters, coagulation studies, and the interpretation of metabolic panels. Special focus is placed on applying these values in real-world clinical scenarios to guide decision-making and identify emerging complications.
  • Structured narration, visual reinforcement, and integrated knowledge checks, participants will gain a deeper understanding of lab-based diagnostics such as the anion gap, BUN-to-creatinine ratio, liver function tests, complete blood count interpretation, and more.
  • Designed to promote critical thinking by linking abnormal lab values with pathophysiology, potential treatment implications, and transport considerations.

Upon successful completion of this course, providers will be better equipped to interpret diagnostic results and contribute meaningfully to the continuum of care for patients requiring advanced monitoring and stabilization.
