Scott McConnell, RN, BSN, CEN, NRP, EMS-I, goes over the education requirements paramedics need to recertify their NREMT-P credentials.

How to recertify your NREMT-P

There are three different ways you can choose to recertify your NREMT-P. First, you can take the National Registry’s test every two years. Second, you can cobble together multiple continuing education programs and classes to meet the NREMT-P criteria. Lastly, you can take a refresher course.

What’s a refresher course?

When doing coursework to complete your NREMT-P recertification requirements, you need to complete 72 hours of classes: 48 hours of refresher content and 24 hours of ‘other.’ So, again, what’s a refresher course?

Refreshers are split up into two segments: mandatory core content and flexible core content. You must fulfill 24 hours of work in each of these categories.

The NREMT-P mandatory core content consists of the following:

  • Airway, breathing and cardiology (8 hours)
  • Medical emergencies (3 hours)
  • Trauma (5 hours)
  • Obstetrics and pediatrics (8 hours)

The NREMT-P flexible core content consists of:

  • Airway, breathing and cardiology (8 hours)
  • Medical emergencies (5 hours)
  • Trauma (1 hours)
  • Obstetrics and pediatrics (8 hours)
  • Operational tasks (2 hours)

The kicker here is that a maximum of ten hours can be distributive (i.e. not live). That means you have to have a least 38 hours of live continuing education to meet the requirements here.

Once you’ve completed these 48 hours of refresher content, you have to complete an additional 24 ours of ‘other.’

So, what does the NREMT-P mean by ‘other’?

Well, pretty much any kind of continuing education you can think of. The hard part here is the live requirement. 12 of the 24 hours have to be live. Additionally, you can only earn up to 12 hours per topic area. So, if you love pediatrics, and are great at it, you can’t load up on 24 hours of pediatric content and call it good. The NREMT-P wants you diversifying your education.
